Technique and materials used

Mixed media on canvas (black and white printed cotton fabric): Acrylic, vinyl paint, medium, gesso, charcoal powder, water-based ink, permanent-ink marker, and matte varnish.

Description of the work

​

I have affectionately applied myself to this diptych of ‘Santiago & Mattias’, in response to the flowery-dot patterns in black and white, along with the rough texture of the fabric.  This seemed a suitable backdrop for the two green and blue columns; I was trying also to reshape the two men’s anatomy through the making of very sharp lines – in real life, they were violently stabbed to death because of their sexual orientation.

 

I’ve used my brushes, permanent ink-markers, and a lot of satin and mate varnishes to make the white become more and more intense when right sort of light hits it. This artwork is unparalleled to me, in terms of ‘visual emotion’, and because it was through painting this piece that I comprehended my reason to creating in my artistic ethos a loyalty to the many ordinary men and women, victims of hate crime, who inspire me. 

 

This ethos helps me to strive toward my dreams; to embrace my day-by-day life and keep it none too private – not as I had wished and needed to do during my youth. The realisation came to me that I’m here to express a different part of me, exploring gender issues, exposure, vulnerability, and the meaning of hope after tragedy – often in the context of what shouldn’t be happening in this day and age. 

 

I have a desire to create paintings which are resonant of social and cultural antecedents.  Being somewhat of an outsider myself, I empathise with many of my visual protagonists; in this case, “my boys.” I’m convinced that this is an intrepid piece of art ideally suited to a staunch and committed human-rights advocate and sensitive owner.
