STUDIO ANGEL CORREA

Part of the nature of humanity seems to be that many of us harbour a primitive myth-making impulse.  This is evident in the continued influence of classical mythology on popular science-fiction stories, film-making, and the like.  Some interpretations of the flight of Daedalus and his son Icarus articulate the notion of the soul’s ‘flight’ toward God.

I decided to depict a sense of profound vulnerability; a body suddenly rendered incomplete and bereft of its former power.  I’ve depicted this vulnerable state with disfigurement, missing limbs, and a void left where the male organ would normally have appeared.  Yet in so doing, prominence is brought to this symbol of robustness.

It’s through this depiction of negative space, silhouettes and contrast that I attempted to explore the various ways of thinking, perceiving and being when life-circumstances one day take each of us closer to the soul’s flight from the body.
